NAGPUR: The bureaucracy has put the onus on the cabinet for clearing the vexed cost hike proposals for irrigation projects, said sources in state's water resources department (WRD).

The controversy had started after replies to RTI queries showed that cost escalations to the tune of 400% were approved for 38 projects of Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC) within just two months during the tenure of NCP's Ajit Pawar in 2009. It not only strained relations between the coalition partners, the Congress and the NCP, but finally ended up with an ACB inquiry into irrigation contracts.
