Will RTI help in eradication of corruption and poverty?

Recommended Posts

As I can see from the Act the principal aim of the act seems to motivate people and encouraging them to have information about the working of the system to see that it works efficiently.

But it is said that poverty alleviation is also the aim of this act. I cannot forsee how that can be achieved?:confused:

Any views?

The Government has lot of poverty alleviation programme and on which huge amount are been spent.

  • Loans are being given,
  • subsidized food been distributed,
  • many work programme are in place,
  • banks are giving loans to people below poverty line

In all such cases RTI will help in overseeing the way in which these amounts are spent to reach the real beneficiaries. If the deviation in this field are to be checked, offcourse voluntary organizations/NGO's should make the use of the RTI so that the amount allotted should really percolate to the real beneficiaries.

Thus by using this technique, RTI will help in eradication of poverty in a big way.

If you remember famous Rajiv Ghandhi Statement that out of every 1 Re only 7 paise reaches to actual user for development. RTI would be a great tool in improving the efficinecy of the poverty aliveation and development programme.

In today's world knowledge is power, RTI will help in restoring power to people.

RTI is good solution of so many problems of our country. If there is one agency like post office to get the application of RTI and a good agency to monitor the timely providing the informations. The agency must punish some fellows and it will create good atmosphere for RTI.

@ashakantasharma  please give credit to the original poster of that article

The preamble to the RTI Act only talks about "containing corruption" and not "stopping and/or removing corruption":

Whereas the Constitution of India has established democratic Republic;

And whereas democracy requires an informed citizenry and transparency of information which are vital to its functioning and also to contain corruption and to hold Governments and their instrumentalities accountable to the governed;

And whereas revelation of information in actual practice is likely to conflict with other public interests including efficient operations of the Governments, optimum use of limited fiscal resources and the preservation of confidentiality of sensitive information;

And whereas it is necessary to harmonise these conflicting interests while preserving the paramountcy of the democratic ideal;

Now, therefore, it is expedient to provide for furnishing certain information to citizens who desire to have it.

Be it enacted by Parliament in the Fifty-sixth Year of the Republic of India as follows:—

Sir,

What makes you think that somebody else is the Original Author of the article if that would have been the case I would have mentioned it in my article itself ?

I have created the article with my own research and analysis after collecting data from various sources from the internet.

I was recently reading some where about history of Corruption in India . I get to know if we analyse about it in modern context . The corruption in India began from Mir Zaffar and latter by British Officials . Warren Hastings was impeached for the same .

No doubt RTI was and IS a land mark reform to eradicate corruption . Its a powerful weapon in hand of common citizens ....

Actually I wants to ask if somebody know any estimation about amount of corrupt money unveiled by RTI from 2005 till present .....

      The RTI query, sent to the Ministry of Finance, sought details on individual exposure of various PSBs to corporate borrowers. The questions that were asked in the RTI query sought information on the loans given to the Reliance Industries, Adani Group, GVK Group, GMR and Jaypee Group. The RTI was first directed to the Finance Ministry, which then forwarded the RTI request to various banks asking them to provide the information. The RTI had questions on the money loaned to big industrial houses by government-run banks. However, all public sector banks except Andhra Bank and Allahabad Bank have refused to divulge information citing either the 'personal nature' of questions or how they don't fit under the provisions of the RTI Act.
      In their reply to the RTI query, the banks have said that the information available with banks under "fiduciary relationship" is exempted from disclosure.
      Read about: Fiduciary Relationship under RTI
      While Andhra Bank and Allahabad Bank have disclosed the loans given to big corporates, all other lenders refused to do so. Banks which did not disclose any detail in their reply to the RTI query include State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Maharashtra, Corporation Bank, Indian Bank, Canara Bank, UCO Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, Central Bank of India, Bank of India and Syndicate Bank. Earlier this month, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley informed the Rajya Sabha that loans worth Rs 81,683 crore were written-off by public sector banks (PSBs) in 2016-17.
      Country's largest public sector lender, the SBI, said, "The information sought by you under point number three to eight is the third party personal information held by the bank in a fiduciary capacity, the disclosure of which is not warranted for any larger public interest and as such is exempted from disclosure."
