Success at the cost of life

As reported by IANS in expressbuzz.com on 13 January 2010:RTI activist Satish Shetty killed near Pune RTI activist Satish Shetty killed near Pune PUNE: Leading Right to Information (RTI) activist Satish Shetty - who exposed many land scams in Maharashtra - was killed by unidentified men while on a morning walk at Talegaon on the outskirts of this city Wednesday. "Around 7.15 a.m., when Shetty was on his morning walk, some unidentified people assaulted him and injured him seriously. He was rushed to a private hospital, but succumbed later," Pradeep Aphale, investigating officer of Talegaon Police Station, told IANS. According to a colleague, 38-year-old Shetty left home around 6.45 a.m. for his usual morning walk when some people attacked him with swords near Bhandari Hospital. Shetty, a systematic whistleblower, was credited with throwing light on several major land scams in the picturesque Talegaon-Lonavala regions, now a favourite with realtors in the state. He shot to fame after exposing certain corrupt land deals in and around the country's first expressway, the Mumbai-Pune expressway, over a decade ago. Condemning the incident, leading Mumbai crusader Sumaira Abdulali said this comes barely a week after the attack on another prominent Mumbai social activist Nayana Kathpalia and threats to Neera Punj of Citispace. "This has become a trend and social activists are considered soft targets, the government must take immediate steps to stop such attacks," Abdulali, convenor of Movement against Intimidation, Threats and Revenge against Activists (MITRA), told IANS. MITRA has sent letters to Home Minister R.R. Patil listing the attacks suffered by activists in the past few years. Abdulali was threatened and assaulted in May 2004, H.S. D'Lima of Citispace threatened and assaulted in March 2005, James John of AGNI was threatened and assaulted in March 2006, activist Edwin Britto was threatened and attacked in 2000 and again in June 2005, Suryakant Panchal of BEAG was assaulted in June 2004, Anandini Thakoor and Aftab Siddiqui got threats in July 2005, January 2009 and mobbed thrice, Navin Pandya of AGNI was threatened and attacked in September 2009, S. Augment coaches, says RTI activist

The unprecedented rush of pilgrims going for the Godavari Pushkarams from north Andhra and Visakhapatnam could be addressed by augmentation of coaches to regular trains running with less number of coaches. Many reserved ‘pushkaram’ passengers cancelled their tickets even as others travelled without tickets. The long queues at the booking counters and the prospect of missing their trains must have made them decide to travel without tickets, even if that meant paying penalties. Over 200 reserved passengers from Duvvada cancelled their tickets on Monday and Tuesday, resulting in a loss of about Rs.50,000 to ECoR at Duvvada station,” says RTI activist K. Eswar. The passengers could not board the train as many passengers were squatting on the floor of the coaches.Read more at; Augment coaches, says RTI activist - The Hindu

  18. As reported at indianexpress.com on Apr 10 2011 Pune : Real estate professional Arvind Kaushal, 40, who had filed an RTI application on a construction work in Kharadi, was allegedly assaulted by two unidentified men on Friday evening. He has alleged in his police complaint that he was attacked at the behest of a person linked to the group that was doing the construction work, which was stopped by the Pune Municipal Corporation after his RTI application. Kaushal, who suffered injuries on his back, head and nose in the attack, has been admitted to a private hospital in Yerawada. The complaint was registered with Yerawada police. The incident took place when Kaushal along with his brother Major (retd) Lalit Kaushal stepped out of his Kalyaninagar office. Kaushal had filed the RTI query with the PMC’s building permission department about three months ago. The query related to construction of some shops in the Ganga Constella project by Goel-Raisoni Associates in Kharadi. “Based on the information that he got from the PMC, he had once again contacted the officials. Subsequently, the PMC issued a stop work notice and Goel-Raisoni Associates had stopped the work immediately,” his brother said. PMC officials could not be contacted for comments despite efforts. Kaushal had recently filed another RTI query on alleged irregularities in construction of some residential buildings. “The PMC was in the process of issuing a show cause notice to Goel-Raisoni Associates,” the brother added. Sub inspector Suresh Gholap of Yerawada police said, “Kaushal says the attack was in retaliation to his RTI query. We have registered a complaint against two unidentified persons under Section 326 of the Indian Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means. We have also detained a person for inquiry.” Anuj Goel of Goel-Raisoni Associates said, “There is absolutely no element of truth in the allegation. The person he is talking about does not work with our company now. If he thinks that person is linked to us, why hasn’t he named us in the complaint? The work has been stopped not because of RTI query. We are reviving the plan.”

Rani said it was a gross mistake on the part of the KHADC to lend ears to the complaints made by the pressure groups. 25. When an RTI activist tried to dig some information on what seemed like an illegal construction work in Gurgaon, he was in for some surprise. Sachin Gaur (RTI activist) was not only not allowed to check the records of the place, he was manhandled by some 8-10 goons and also booked in the Sector 4 police station for simply exercising his democratic right of asking certain questions. When recently Gaur read an article in an English daily about a 'ghost construction,' going on in the Sector 4 near HUDA District Ayurvedic office, he was intrigued. The English daily was calling it a ghost construction, since no one (either HUDA or MCG) was taking responsibility of the construction. Gaur, being an activist filed three RTI's and he received one reply from the CMO office. The application gave him the right to go and check the illegal construction file.- See more at: error page more at: RTI activist manhandled in Gurgaon: He was looking into illegal construction in Sector 4
