  3. ‘LIC invested heavily in tobacco companies in ’11’ Reported by Teena Thacker in deccanchronicle.com ‘LIC invested heavily in tobacco companies in ’11’ | Deccan Chronicle Life Insurance Corpor-ation of India (LIC) invested heavily in Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) and other tobacco companies, including smokeless tobacco during the year 2011, a RTI by the Voluntary Association of India (VHAI) has revealed. According to the VHAI these investments are against the spirit of World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the first ever global public health treaty negotiated under the UN, which India ratified way back in 2003. The RTI disclosed that the number of equity shares held by LIC in ITC Ltd was around 99.58 crores which have a book value of `3561 crores approximately on 31st Mar 2011. Not only this LIC was having debentures of book value `50 crores in Dharampal Satyapal Ltd (DS Group) a leading smokeless tobacco company. “It is shocking to see that LIC & other Government Insurance Companies are” still investing in ITC,” VHAI said in a statement. It has been seen that Indian Tobacco Company (ITC) cigarette business grew by 14% recording net sales of `3385.15 crores during the quarter July — September 2012. ITC Ltd reported 21.2% jump in net profit at `1836.42 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, 2012 on back of 19.6% growth in net sales at Rs 7146 crore. Citing Article 5.3 of the convention, Bhavna Mukhopadhyay, executive director VHAI said, “Government institutions and their bodies should have no financial interest in the tobacco industry unless they are responsible for managing the country’s ownership in a state-owned tobacco company. Parties should not allow any official of the government of any semi/quasi government body to accept payments from industry.” The RTI also disclosed as of the quarter ended September 2012, the Life Insurance Corporation, other insurance companies and government’s Unit Trust of India held a staggering 31.52 per cent equity (through owning shares) of the company.

  8. As reported by Shyamlal Yadav in indiatoday.digitaltoday.in on January 19,2009 A report on this website regarding lapsed and subsequently discontinued policies of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) made an impact. For the first time in its history the LIC has offered to revive 'policies lapsed for more than five years'. The LIC has given advertisements on Sunday in almost all newspapers in this regard. This scheme is open for the period from January 19 to February 28. This website has reported on December 24 last that 5.91 crore life insurance policies had been discontinued by the insurer due to non-payments of premiums by the policy holders during last seven years (2000-01 to 2006-07). These were the policies which could not be revived under the norms of LIC. India Today had gathered this information under RTI Act from the LIC for the particular policies which have been lapsed due to discontinuance for five years. Till, now if any policy holder is unable to pay the premium continuously five years, the policy was lapsed and it could not be revived. But when India Today came to know from sources that the number of such policies is actually very high, we filed an application to the LIC last year asking the number of such policies and the amount deposited against such policies. In response, LIC provided the number but not the amount. LIC had quoted Section 7(9) of RTI Act to deny the information, saying "It will extra ordinarily divert our resources". Then, we made an appeal to the Appellate Authority in the LIC but that appeal was also rejected. After that we filed an appeal to the Central Information Commission (CIC), but A.N. Tewari, Commissioner in CIC, also rejected our appeal on December 4 justifying the plea of LIC. Then, on December 24 this website and in India Today Hindi dated January 7 2009, published this report. We had pointed out that although LIC launches campaign to increase the number of policies and its agents try to attract the fresh cases but do not pay much attention to retain the policies. If any policy holder was unable to pay the premium for five years, the policy was not allowed to revive. When India Today contacted LIC headquarters Mumbai, an official in Customer Relation Management department said, "We have launched this revival scheme for the first time as an experiment. After examining the responses of policy holders, we will decide what to do further with our rules." Obviously, this revival scheme may be beneficial for crores of policy holders and some credit certainly also goes to India Today for raising this issue. LIC’s tobacco stain shows

As reported by G.S. MUDUR at telegraphindia.com on October 13 , 2011 New Delhi, Oct. 12: The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) invested more than Rs 3,600 crore last year in the tobacco industry, anti-tobacco activists and cancer specialists said today, describing the investments as ironical and unethical. Figures obtained through the right to information route by a consortium of activists and doctors show that in 2010-11, LIC had invested in shares of ITC and VST Industries and in debentures of Dharampal Satyapal Ltd, which makes chewable tobacco products. The LIC investment in ITC had a book value of more than Rs 3,561 crore, while its investment in VST Industries was about Rs 15 lakh, according to information released by the company. It also invested Rs 50 crore in Dharampal Satyapal. “It’s ironic that LIC is investing in an industry that contributes to ill-health and death, and an industry that some arms of the government are trying to discourage,” said Pankaj Chaturvedi, associate professor at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. “The public should know where LIC is investing its funds,” Chaturvedi told The Telegraph. “The government has enforced the ban on public smoking and it has also outlined steps to phase out tobacco cultivation in the coming years.” The RTI application had been filed by a consortium called Voice of Tobacco Victims, mainly representing patients with cancer. LIC officials were not immediately available to explain its policy of investing in the tobacco industry. The number of shares held by LIC in ITC jumped from about 522,089,903 on March 31, 2010, to 995,891,658 on March 31, 2011, according to the company’s response to the RTI query. Tata Memorial doctors said the RTI response from LIC suggested it was not charging extra premium on all tobacco users. “It is ridiculous.… LIC invests in tobacco, it doesn’t charge higher premium from addicts, but they may reject the claims of addicts,” Surendra Shastri, head of preventive oncology at Tata Memorial, said in a statement. In response to the RTI query on LIC’s policy on insurance for tobacco users, the company said the risk assessment for consumption of tobacco would take into consideration multiple health factors ranging from quantity and type of tobacco to health conditions of the applicant. “The adverse health effects of tobacco consumption is dependent on (the) quantity of consumption, type of tobacco consumed, duration of consumption and any other associated health condition of the insurance applicant,” LIC said. “Depending on these factors, while large numbers of customers are accepted without any extra premium, some of the applicants may be charged higher premium.” Public health specialists campaigning against tobacco said the investment was unethical because it was against the principle that governments should not invest in tobacco, enshrined in an international convention to which India is a signatory. “On the one hand, India incurs a cost of nearly Rs 10,000 crore each year from tobacco-related health expenses, on the other, LIC invests Rs 3,600 crore in tobacco,” Prakash Gupta, director of the Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health, Mumbai, said in a statement.
  12. Hello, For past few months i am a regular visitor at LICHFL FC road branch.I had to close my existing loan and take a new one. Through an LIC executive Mr.Ramesh Pawbake, I approached LIC. Today after 2 months of effort my loan has been closed but there is no information about the disbursement to be made on my new loan. I would like to highlight that that today I am totally aware about the LICHFL way of working and know nothing is driven here. For them its a normal case. There are many pending case like this. But no action is being taken to resolve this issue. Customer doesn't have any contact to speak to other than the executive who is totally helpless. The branch Manager Mr.Apte gives a new committment everytime you meet him. he doesn't have any control over his juniors. The situation at the office on FC road is messy.the branch manager and the executive whenever asked about the target dates gives simple answer " we cannot say,it will take some time,we have manpower issue, software issue". If you try to register a complaint on the website,it is never responds!!!!!!!!!! Bottomline is there is zero accountability, zero responsibility, zero reactivity.Lot of people are suffering because and this is happen for quite some time now and no action is being taken.

I have applied for loan from lic housing finance ltd but after a lot deal of inspection and paper work the area manager- chandigarh says " u cannot get loan as u deal in second hand cars - which is on negative list of the company " i want to know as to why on such list are placed self employed persons and whether or not such list exists at all. I also put up enqiry at lichfl site and their officer , after listening to me, says that u approach the office again. On enquiring from that officer i was told that rti act doesn't apply to them . Is it correct that rti act is not applicable to an organisation dealing with people and considered to be helping people by way of loaning-and aiding housing infrastructure and acting like a psu bank. Kindly explain and help
