VIJAYAWADA: Though the Right to Information (RTI) Act ensures transparency, the lack of awareness among government officials is causing a major concern for its successful implementation, said state information commissioner P Vijay Babu.

Addressing mediapersons at the Sub-collector’s office here Tuesday, he said that inquiry was conducted into 50 cases booked under the RTI Act. Show-cause notices were issued concerned persons in eight cases and about 19 cases were dismissed. He said most of the cases were related to land and warned that stringent action would be taken against the officials if they were found lethargic in providing information to people.

Earlier in the day, addressing an awareness programme for information officers and assistant information officers, he said employees should lead by example in effective implementation of the Right to Information Act.

He said the RTI Act would help in building corruption-free society. He also advised the officials to bring the details of applicants found misusing the Act to the notice of the commission.

Krishna district collector Babu A explained that efforts were being made to turn Krishna into the first smart district in the state and explained about the concept of e-POSE
