RBI has permitted such charges. It would be Rs.60 per year. Let us use bigger issues to contest in public interest. Let us not expect free services.

Contact your Bank personally, and if you do not want SMS, ask them whether they can stop charging such SMS. (That means if you do not want SMS, then you need not pay...If you wanted SMS you have to pay prescribed fees, as nothing comes free from any financial institution, . SMS are for customers benefit, and several customers rightly avoided frauds/recovered amounts quickly due to these SMS, particularly in ATM transactions/online debits through cloned debit cards)

( I am not using this facility, as my withdrawals will come to the notice of my wife)

The Reserve Bank has directed banks to charge customers for transaction SMS alerts on the basis of usage, instead of imposing a fixed fee.

"Considering the technology available with banks and the telecom service providers, it should be possible for banks to charge customers based on actual usage of SMS alerts," RBI has instructed by issuing a notification to all banks.

Who said NBs are earning crores of Profit ?

Book profits are different as showing actual profits may shatter Public Confidence. Each bank is crippled with Non Performing advances and in jitters virtually.

They are not charitable institutions, and are financial institutions, and they are charging nominal fees basing on actual usage from the customers who accept.

Strange are the ways.

One Big Activist met me and asked me last night, to provide citations for obtaining certified copies as free of cost as letter for inviting inspection is three days late. (His request is not for certified copies, and specifically for inspection form alone).
