NAINITAL: There are norms of the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation that call for all buses older than six years or having plied over six lakh km to be phased out from operations in the hilly areas. A large chunk of the 363 buses of the UTC used in the six districts of the Kumaon region, however, would not meet norms laid down by the corporation itself. The poor state of repair of these buses poses a risk to the lives of passengers. On Saturday, 17 died in Almora as a bus rolled down a gorge.

A recent response to an RTI petition revealed that of the 1,400 UTC buses in the state, 589 were in poor shape, and could not be used.
