Language of reply of RTI Application

I received an application in Punjabi language under RTI Act. The applicant is asking for reply in Punjabi. The CPIO is in Punjab and the official language of the State is Punjabi. Is there any obligation under the provisions of RTI Act to supply information in the language of applicants choice.

RTI application can be made in English/Hindi or the local language.

Since local language is Punjabi, he has filed the RTI in Punjabi.

Since official language is also Punjabi, you need to reply in Punjabi BUT if you are supplying any copies of any documents then they have to be in their original language. There is no need for the PIO to translate the copies from other languages to the language of choice of the applicant.

(ie only your reply / covering letter can be in Punjabi)
