NGOs in TN largest beneficiary of foreign funds

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu occupies the second position in the country in terms of influx of foreign funds for non-governmental organisation (NGO) activity in the State, according to information received through the Right to Information Act.

 

NGOs working in the State have received about Rs 1,650 crore from agencies abroad in 2008-09.

 

The State was second only to Delhi which received foreign aid to the tune of Rs 2,012 crore. The figures for 2009-10 was under compilation.

 

The other interesting point that emerged from the RTI queries was that the four southern states occupied the top five positions in terms of foreign funding, after Delhi.

The Union Home Ministry, in reply to an RTI query filed by activist Y Arul Doss, stated that Tamil Nadu had the maximum number of NGOs in the country.

 

It had 3,123 organisations while Delhi had 1,295 organisations.

 

Neighbouring Andhra Pradesh was third on the list having about 2,250 NGOs and getting about Rs 1,244 crore as foreign aid. Karnataka and Kerala got about Rs 1,008 crore and Rs 990 crore of foreign funds respectively.

 

The Ministry stated that nationwide, more than 20,088 NGOs received about Rs 10,802.67 crore of foreign funds in 2008-09.

 

As per the government records, the figure for foreign contributions to NGOs nationwide jumped from Rs 3,402 crore in 1999-2000 to Rs 10,802.67 crore in 2008-09.

Even the number of NGOs rose from 13,986 to 20,088 during the corresponding period.
